World Famous Olney Pancake Race Today

17 February 2015, 07:48

Runners with pancakes will be taking over Olney again later as the town's Pancake Race gets underway.

On Shrove Tuesday every year the ladies of the town compete in the world famous Pancake Race, a tradition which dates back to 1445.

It is understood the tradition started with a busy housewife heard the church bell as she was cooking and ran to the service with her frying pan and pancake.

The 2015 race will be held on Tuesday 17th February and the race starts at 11:55am.

Children from Olney schools also take part in their own races.

Olney competes every year against the women of Liberal, Kansas, USA in a friendly competition which is in its 66th year.
