£80 million for street lighting

Gloucestershire is getting more than £80 million to improve street lighting around the county.

The money comes from the Government as part of a scheme to light up areas to improve road safety and reduce crime.

Gloucestershire County Council applied last year for the funds so they could continue a programme of replacing bulbs with energy saving ones and dimmers, to help save money and help the environment

Transport Minister Sadiq Khan says:

“Good quality street lighting means a reduction in crime and the fear of crime, less light pollution and a safer night time environment for everyone. I am very pleased that Gloucestershire Council are using this Private Finance Initiative funding to deliver real benefits to their local residents.

"Partnerships like this provide vital investment in public services which can transform the experience of the travelling public whether they are walking, driving or riding."
