First bid to be first police commissioner

A former police Superintendent has become the first person to officially declare his intention to become Gloucestershire's first police commissioner.

54-year-old Martin Surl began work here in the county as a constable and says he has worked extensively in Gloucestershire, around the UK and Europe.

Gloucestershire will elect its first police commissioner in November.

The commissioner's job will be to make sure Gloucestershire has an effective and efficient police force and one which reflects what people say they want.

The commissioner will represent the public on all policing and crime matters, deal with the police budget and work to improve the quality of life here.

Martin said: "I was born and bred in Gloucestershire and my family has been here for generations. I am proud of my Gloucestershire roots and it would be an enormous privilege to be elected its first commissioner."
