Snow warning for Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire Police are reminding motorists to take precautions when driving on icy or snow covered roads.

Motorists are urged to be careful and follow these simple tips to safeguard themselves and other road users:

* Check that your car is up to the journey, tyres are correctly inflated and in good condition, and that your lights are clean and working properly.

* Ensure anti-freeze has been added to the radiator & that screen wash is of sufficient concentration.

* Tell a friend or relative where you are going.

* Take a spade, flask of hot drink, torch, mobile phone (fully charged or with charger), blanket and appropriate outdoor clothing.

* Slow down on icy or snowy roads and leave a greater distance between you and the car in front.

* Check your route with such organisations as RAC Travel and AA Road-watch, and tune into local radio before you set out.

* If you get stuck in an isolated area, stay with your vehicle and remember that the engine should not be left running in deep snow, as there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

* Use your mobile phone if you need to access the emergency services for help.

Inspector Jason Keates, Traffic Management and Road Safety Inspector for the county, said:

"At this time of year the weather can create poor driving conditions, including icy roads, fog and possibly snow.  It is always worth considering the road conditions before you set out on a journey in winter and, if the roads are particularly bad, you should consider whether your journey is really necessary.
The highways authorities will take appropriate measures to keep roads treated and we will attend and assist people who get into serious difficulties, but it is important that we all do our bit to look after ourselves and our own safety ."

There's also a warning about staying safe and warm in your own home. Gloucestershire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer says he does not want a repeat of the eight chimney fires that have already happened in the last week. Geoff Sallis said:

"With the recent cold spell of weather, we have been called out to deal with eight chimney fires in the last week. While we always see an increase in chimney fires at this time of year, getting chimneys and flues professionally swept and burning seasoned wood, can cut down on the risk. A smoke filled room can ruin everyone’s day and force residents out of their house into the cold when they want to be sitting in front of a nice warm fire! "

Residents can help to avoid this by following a few simple rules:

* Do not light fires using flammable liquids such as petrol or paraffin
* Use the recommended fuel for the fire or woodburner; not cardboard or wrapping paper
* Do not overload the fire with fuel
* Use a fireguard to prevent embers setting light to furnishings
* Make sure that there is sufficient ventilation
* Ensure that the fire is completely out before going to bed or out for the day
* Fit a smoke alarm
