The history of cheese rolling

No-one is quite sure just how long cheese rolling has been taking place in Gloucestershire.

The first written record of the event goes back to 1850, but that describes the event being held 100 years before!

And it may well go back to pre-Roman times.

Cheese rolling expert Richard Jefferies told Heart more about it's history:

Cheese rolling facts:

Between 1941 and 1954 a wooden cheese was used because of food rationing.

The gradient of the slope is 1-in-2 in places and  1-in-1 in others.

The event has only been cancelled three times before, in 1998 because of safety concerns, in 2001 it was down to 'Foot-and-mouth' disease and in 2003 the SARAID rescue team were unavailable at short notice due to an earthquake in Algeria.
