No cheese rolling this year!

We found out just how popular the event is when news broke that this year's cheese rolling was off.

The reaction was staggering, with thousands signing up to a facebook page calling for the event to be saved and if you believe some of the comments online, rogue cheese rollers may go to Cooper's Hill on bank holiday Monday anyway.

The reason it was called off was safety, but not for the competitors, instead the safety of the thousands of people who come to watch every year. In 2009 15,000 turned up, despite Cooper's Hill having a capacity of just 5,000.

Despite the best efforts of Gloucestershire County Council and others to put the event back on, they finally agreed that it just was not going to be possible.

Committee member Richard Jefferies told Heart they won't support any unofficial events:

Listen to the warning

The good news is there are already plans to make sure the event can go ahead in the future.

Some of the ideas being looked at include expanding into the city centre, streaming videos of the event onto big screens and even a cheese and cider festival - watch this space!
