A Herne Bay woman who was caught on the dash cam of a taxi leaving a house she had just burgled has been jailed.
Abigail May, aged 40, of Claremont Road, Herne Bay, was jailed for a total of 45 months at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday 8 July after admitting two burglaries and one count of theft.
The court heard that she had burgled two houses in Sherwood Road, Birchington, within one day of each other in May 2016.
On 27 May the occupant of a house in Sherwood Road returned home by taxi to see May leaving her address carrying stolen items, including handbags, a silver diamante bracelet and a pair of sunglasses May had stolen from the occupant’s locked car.
When challenged by the occupant May left the scene, but she was filmed running away on the taxi’s dash cam and was later identified by a police officer.
During a search of her home a Kindle stolen from another address in Sherwood Road the previous day was recovered. May was unable to provide an explanation as to how she came to have it in her possession.
During interviews she denied the offences but later pleaded guilty to the two burglaries and the theft from the car, and to breaching a suspended sentence for an earlier theft at the Ashford Designer Outlet centre.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Adam Hinton said: ‘Burglary can have a lasting, detrimental impact on victims whose homes have been targeted.
'I hope this sentence acts as a strong deterrent to burglars, showing as it does that the courts take this type of offence extremely seriously.’
