Man Jailed For Assaulting Constable

A 21-year-old man who assaulted a special constable in Tunbridge Wells has been jailed for three years and three months.

Liam Nurden of Chancel Drive in Wainscott tried to punch the woman and pushed her over causing her to break her wrist.

She was one of several others trying to stop him getting a away after he was spotting acting suspiciously outside a house.

Nurdern admitted nine charges including a Section 18 grievous bodily harm charge. He also pleaded guilty to three counts of assault by beating, three counts of criminal damage, one count of attempting to burgle and one charge of going equipped for burglary.

The court heard how on Monday 6 February 2017 officers were called at 1.48pm to a report of a man who had been seen acting suspiciously outside a house in Powder Mill Lane, Tunbridge Wells.

Police attended the area and found Nurden who matched the description of the man. As officers approached him, he suddenly ran off and jumped over a fence.

Officers chased after him as he climbed onto a garage roof, before jumping off and heading towards Cunnington Road. A Special Constable, who had attended with the police officer, attempted to stop Nurden but he continued to run at her and then attempted to punch her.

The officer avoided the punch but Nurden then ran straight into her on purpose causing the officer to fall backwards resulting in the officer breaking a wrist.

He was then tackled to the floor by the other officer where he was then arrested.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Tony Hatcher said: "Nurden was seen attempting to break into a property and unluckily for him the homeowner was inside and alerted officers. He ran away from officers and during the chase he had no regard to the Special Constable he attempted to punch and the pushed her over resulting in her breaking her wrist.

"I’m pleased he has been sentenced and I hope this outcome provides a deterrent to any other person engaging in criminal behaviour".
