A man has been given a seven year prison sentence for trying to rape a woman in Sittingbourne.

Adeniran Adelakun had been visiting a friend when he tried to attack her at a house in June 2016.

The 41-year-old from Tonge Road was found guilty of attempted rape and assault by penetration.

The jury heard how he had attempted to remove her clothing as well as inappropriately touched her and attempted to have sex with her in the living room before she was able to get away from him.

When her friend returned home the victim told her what had happened.

He was also put onto the Sex Offenders' Register for life.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Shaun Ravate, said: "Adelakun's behaviour on that night was disgusting and he preyed on a vulnerable woman who bravely spoke up and reported the incident.

"He denied the allegations continuously and put not only the victim, but also his family, through the ordeal of a trial.

"I'm pleased he has been sentenced and I hope this provides closures for the victim and her family."
