A survey by online retailer isme.com has asked 2000 women over 50 to vote for their best and worst fashion items of the last 50 years. Find out what the results are!
62% of the women who took part in the survey voted shoulder pads the worst fashion item, placing it in 5th place. The 80s trend was worn by everybody with celebrities like the super glamorous Joan Collins making the fad a wardrobe staple! Still, the actress manages to look beautiful in this photo, if a bit too big around the shoulder area...
68% thought the jumpsuit is the most offending piece of fashion. We have to disagree with this one. If done with class, like Cameron Diaz in this photo, jumpsuits can be very flattering and beautiful.
73% of the women surveyed would never been seen in dungarees. Even the stunning Danish model Helena Christensen can't pull off this one. A trend best left to the under 20s
The Spandex mini skirt was ubiquitous in the 80s and early 90s, and made a dangerous, but thankfully short-lived, comeback a couple of years ago. So offensive is this fashion item that 88% of women voted it worst and placed it in second position. Kylie looks very cute in this photo, but we are pleased she's ditched the Spandex mini skirt (and the cycling shorts for that matter!)
Another offending item from the 80s and early 90s: the shell suit. The item, mocked by people like comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as Ali G, has absolutely no redeeming features and with 91% of the votes it goes straight to the top of the worst fashion items of the last 50 years.
Ballet pumps come in at number 5 as the best fashion items of the last 50 years, with 70% of the votes. Practical and easy to wear with trousers, skirts and dresses, they are often worn by celebrities too, such as Emma Stone, who wears them here during a stroll in New York with her dog.
The maxi dress is voted in 4th place with 71% of votes. Feminine, pretty and easy to wear, it's become a staple in many women's wardrobes. Celebrities love them too. Jessica Alba is often seen in a maxi.
The bra that has given women cleavage is voted 3d with 75% of the votes. It was launched in the 90s and championed by The Spice Girls who used to sport theirs under suits, like Victoria Beckham in this photo.
Invented in the 60s by British fashion designer Mary Quant, the mini skirt was deemed very risqué at the time. It has however become a true staple of every woman's wardrobe and 79% have voted it the second best fashion item of the last 50 years. Celebrities love the mini too, with Kate Moss often snapped wearing one.
And at number 1 is the classic LDB - the little black dress! Probably the most versatile type of dress ever created, the LDB suits all, can be dressed up for the evening or down for the day and it's truly the fashion item all women should own. 91% thought so, making it the most popular item!
