Tried And Tested: Facials
We've tried and tested some of the best in the salon and at home facials. Read our verdict here.
1. At the salon: Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion and Oxygen treatment.
This gentle microdermasion treatment uses finely crushed crystals to get rid of dead cells and reveal new, brighter younger skin. The exfoliating crystals are used all over the face (eye area included!) twice at two different intensities: light and medium. This is completely painless and it's very gentle. Afterwards The crystals are wiped off the face and oxygen is applied using a tube linked to a machine. Despite the alarming sucking noise, this is completely painless too. Finally a multi-vitamin mask is applied to the face to stimulate circulation, moisturise and brighten. One treatment is great to revive the skin. To help with fine lines and wrinkles a course of ten is recommend. £45 for the microdermabrasion and £45 for the oxygen treatment. Available nationwide and at London's Emporium Treatment Clinis.
2. At the salon: Voya Organic Ocean Fresh Facial.
This brightening facial is a great pick-me-up when the skin is dull and tired. It uses Voya products, an organic Irish brand that contains active seaweed. The skin is first cleansed twice to remove make up and grime. A gentle exfoliator is then applied, followed by a spritz of face mist to freshen up and clean up any residue. A moisturising and brightening mask is then left applied for ten minutes, and the facial is finished off with a few drops of oil, eye cream and moisturiser. The results are a dewy plump complexion, ready for a night out. £60 for 45 minutes. Available nationwide and at London's Landmark Hotel.
3. At the salon: Nataliya Robinson's Beauty and The Bees Facial.
Nataliya's facial is one of the most fuss free we've encountered. After being wrapped up under a snuggly blanket we were given a thorough but gentle cleansing using a smidge of Manuka Honey + 15 (the number related to the antibacterial quality of the honey) mixed with a drop of warm water to create a creamy soap. The wonderful aroma soon had us relaxed and the velvety texture of the honey mix was pure luxury for our wind-chapped winter skin. Next came a gentle scrub using the honey with a tad less water (honey is a natural exfoliant due to its sugars) and a thick layer of honey to act as a moisturing mask. Nataliya then uses a range of massage techniques to buff, cleanse and plump up the skin. The result is baby soft, deeply cleansed and revitalised skin ready to face the elements. Priced at £150 for 60 minutes and available at nataliyarobinson.co.uk
4. At home: Manuka Honey 15+.
Nataliya Robinson confesses to keeping a jar of Manuka Honey + 15 (you can purchase from Waitrose or on Amazon) next to her sink and using it as a daily cleanser and exfoliator. It's a fantastic treat for over-exposed skin bogged down with too many chemical components, leaving it cleansed, glowing and moisturised without making it work too hard. Because it can get messy and takes a while to rinse we're big fans of this as an at home facial used last thing before bed. Nataliya suggests using it on chapped lips too, and leaving your eyes open during cleansing so eyes absorb the antioxidants from the honey too. Priced at £17.49 from amazon.co.uk.
5. At the salon: Venus Freeze Facial.
This painless, non-invasive treatment uses (MP)² technology, which combines Multi-Polar Radio Frequency and Magnetic Pulsed Fields to cause a thermal response in the skin’s tissue activating its natural healing response and self-repair mechanisms to firm it, make it more elastic and boost its radiance. After cleansing, a heated machine is gently applied to the chosen area, in our case the face, for fifteen to 40 minutes. The heat can be felt but it's very relaxing and there's no discomfort. The treatment is followed by the application of a moisturiser, although we also had a lovely vitamin C mask applied. To see long-lasting results one should have four or more treatments, depending on the skin's condition, but results can be seen after the first. Our face felt and looked tighter and was so radiant that we decided not to apply makeup after. Our experienced and lovely therapist, Clare Marie Peters at Neville Hair and Beauty in London's Knightsbridge, counts model Cara Delevingne as one of her clients, so we knew we were in good hands! Prices start at £95 and the treatment is available nationwide.
6. At the salon: Aromatherapy Associates Rose Facial.
This lovely facial lifts, tones, nourishes and firms the skin using natural, gentle products. After cleansing an enzyme peel is applied to the face to get rid of dead skin cells. This is then followed by the application of the Rose Infinity Hydrating Mask, rose oil, serum, eye cream and finally the moisturiser and lip balm. Painless micro currents are used on the face to help the products penetrate deeply into the face. Neck and shoulder are then massaged. The facial is very relaxing and the results are instant: soft, glowing skin that feels and looks firmer and tighter. A wonderful, luxurious treatment that's ideal for ages between 30 and 50. Great all year around, but particularly good when the weather gets colder and the skin loses moisture. £120 for 90 minutes and available from aromatherapyassociates.com.
7. At home: Aromatherapy Associates Rose Infinity Range.
You can purchase the Aromatherapy Associatees Rose Infinite range for an at home facial.
8. At the salon: Harley Street Skin Clinic Bright Eyed Girl.

This treatment concentrates on the skin around the eyes where a mask is applied to the area, followed by a massage that brightens, nourishes, plumps out fine lines and de-puffs. The results are excellent: fresher, brighter, tighter eyes. Ideal before a night out and to combat tiredness and signs of ageing - no wonder it's used by a number of celebrity clients.
