Boris Johnson says extending mobile phone coverage to underground sections of the Tube network is "the way to go".
A Chinese telecoms firm has offered to install the 50-million pound network free of charge as a gift for the 2012 Olympics.
The Mayor's also dismissed concerns that introducing a mobile phone network on the tube could increase the chance of a terrorist attack.
It comes as the Mayor's office has released figures that he says show the chances of being a victim of crime on London's transport network is at a 6-year low.
The statistics show that most crimes on buses, trains, trams and tubes have fallen.
