Revenge Porn Conviction

A 21 year old man from Romford who posted intimate images of a woman on Facebook has become one of the first people convicted under a new revenge porn law.

Jason Asagba, of Chadwell Heath Lane, pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "On 16 April, which was only three days after the offence legislation came into force, Asagba threatened to post intimate pictures of a 20-year-old woman from Reading on social media.

"He subsequently posted the images on Facebook and sent them to members of the victim's family."

Detective Constable Steven Rose said: "This was an extremely distressing case for the victim.

"However with these new powers, anyone found committing these offences will be dealt with by the court.

"We believe that this is the first conviction of the new offence in the country, which highlights the fact that Thames Valley Police takes this crime extremely seriously and will investigate such reports."

The police spokesman said that Asagba was charged with disclosing sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress under Section 33 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015.

He has been bailed to appear at the same court on August 7 to be sentenced.
