Star's 911 call

The frantic efforts by Brittany Murphy's mother and husband to save the US actress' life have been revealed in an emergency call recording.

The Sin City movie star collapsed at her home in Hollywood Hills, California, on December 20 and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

During the recording, her mum Sharon is heard crying and telling a '911' dispatcher that the 32-year-old was not breathing.

The dispatcher gives directions on how to try to revive the actress.

The mother then relays the information to Simon Monjack, who had already started trying to resuscitate his wife.

Sharon tells the dispatcher: "My daughter's passed out," adding that the actress had been ill, had vomited and was feeling dizzy.

She states that the actress was not taking any medication.

The mother is also heard crying and wailing at times during the call. "Brittany, please come back," she screams.

Coroner's officials are awaiting the results of toxicology tests to determine how the actress died.

They have said the family reported Murphy was ill with flu-like symptoms in the days before her death.

Murphy's family laid her to rest at a funeral service on December 24 in Hollywood Hills.

The actress started out in sitcoms and commercials in the early 1990s before winning starring roles in several films.

Her big screen breakthrough came in 1995, as a dowdy high school student in Clueless.

Murphy then starred with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie in 1999's Girl, Interrupted and was rapper Eminem's love interest in 8 Mile.

She also appeared in Just Married, Little Black Book, and Sin City, and voiced Gloria the penguin in the 2006 animated film Happy Feet.
