Premier League footballer Anton Ferdinand has been sent a bullet in the post ahead of this weekend's FA Cup match against Chelsea.
The package was received amid the ongoing race row between the QPR defender and Chelsea captain John Terry.
"We are investigating an allegation of malicious communication received today at QPR FC," said the Metropolitan Police in a statement.
Police would not confirm what was in the letter, which arrived at QPR's training ground.
QPR has advised fans to arrive for the Chelsea match early because the club plans to carry out full searches.
A statement from QPR said: "Entry to the stadium will be permitted from 10.30am for the midday kick-off.
"We are asking for your full understanding and co-operation."
Chelsea captain John Terry is accused of racially abusing the QPR defender when the two clubs last met in October.
He will appear at a court hearing on Wednesday on a racially aggravated public order offence. He denies all allegations.
The race row intensified in recent months as Ferdinand was sent a threatening letter in November, leading him to ramp up security at his home.
But a number of Chelsea players have come out in defence of Terry. Ashley Cole is the latest in a number of high-profile Blues players and managers to step forward volunteering character evidence for their captain.
And Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has urged the two players to shake hands, saying that the game is "based on good values more than anything else".
