Entertainer Rolf Harris on trial in new charges
Rolf Harris has gone on trial accused of sexually assaulting seven girls and women in "brazen" attacks over more than 30 years, a court has heard.
The complainants were aged between 12 and 42 when they were allegedly assaulted between 1971 and 2004.
Prosecutor Jonathan Rees told a jury at Southwark Crown Court that most of the behaviour fell into "a broad category that might be described as unwanted groping and includes, for example, grabbing or touching breasts over clothing or slipping a hand up or into a skirt to touch the vaginal area".
He added: "One notable feature of the case is that none of these assaults is alleged to have happened in private - all appear, so it is alleged, to have occurred in public settings when there were other people in the near vicinity.
"And it may be that you (the jury) will want to consider whether Mr Harris's celebrity status played any part in making him apparently so brazen in what it is alleged that he did."
One of those alleging assault is a blind and disabled woman who was 27 at the time she was allegedly groped by Harris at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London in the 1970s.
Mr Rees said the woman had recognised Harris's voice and heard him say: "Has anyone told you what a good-looking woman you are?"
He is then said to have declined to shake the woman's hand and instead "crouched down, kissed the back of her neck and...began slobbering over her".
Mr Rees said that the woman had told Harris to "get off" but he had "put one hand down the back of her skirt while he placed the other under her bottom over the top of her skirt".
He later cupped her breasts and squeezed her nipples, the court heard.
Harris, 86, is also accused of pulling a 14-year-old girl onto his lap and putting his hand up her skirt at a music event in London in 1971.
The entertainer is watching the trial by videolink after a judge ruled last year that he would not have to attend in person due to his age and health.
The jury has been told that Harris is serving jail time for indecently assaulting four female victims and that he "continues to maintain his innocence" regarding those offences.
Harris denies the charges currently on trial - seven of indecent assault and one alternative charge of sexual assault.
The trial is expected to last six weeks.
