People in Swaffham are set to give troops a heroic welcome back from Afghanistan today.

Around 100 service men from II Squadron of RAF Marham will take part in a ‘Welcome Home Parade’ in the town. The parade will start at 11am and the squadron will receive their medals in the Market Place.

The airmen have served three months in the war zone providing air support for ground troops and helping with intelligence work. The event will be topped off with a fly by from the base’s Tornado jet fighters.

Ian Sherwood, Mayor of Swaffham said: “Swaffham Town Council sincerely hopes that all residents, businesses and visitors of all ages will be able to give our returning airmen a real Swaffham welcome. We want this to be a homecoming parade that they deserve and a thank you that they will remember for a long time after the day.”

As a result of the parade, a number of roads will be closed in the town between 8am - 1pm and between 6am – 1pm both the Central Car Park in the Market Place and Pedlars Car Park will not be in use.
