Christmas Drink Drive Figures

20 January 2012, 06:00

Over Christmas police forces over the four counties have carried out their usual campaigns against drink driving. The festive period can be a time where people drink more, which can lead to more people drink driving.

These are the figures we have collected from your local police forces:

Hertfordshire

Around 1300 people were stopped and breath tested, 134 of these people were arrested for being over the limit (9.7%).

This compares to around 1500 people stopped and 139 people arrested in 2010

Bedfordshire

Around 800 people were stopped and breath tested, 69 of these people were arrested for being over the limit (11.7%).

This is 33 more people than Christmas 2010

 Buckinghamshire

There were 102 arrests compares to 77 in 2010

Northamptonshire

There were 2,532 people stopped and breath tested ,117 of these people were arrested for being over the limit

Of the 117 people arrested, 80 have been charged with investigations continuing on the others

Five of the arrests made were between 7am and noon the ‘morning after’

Of the 117 people arrested, 28 are aged between 17 and 24

18 of the 17-24 year olds have been charged and investigations are continuing on the others

Four of the arrests for 17-24 year olds were made the morning after

The figures for the same period in the 2010/11 campaign were:

There were 1066 people stopped and breath tested ,95 of these people were arrested for being over the limit

Of the 95 people arrested, 60 had been charged with investigations continuing on the others

Six of the arrests made were between 7am and noon the ‘morning after’

Of the 95 people arrested, 29 were aged between 17 and 24

18 of the 17-24 year olds had been charged and investigations were continuing on the other

Two of the arrests for 17-24 year olds were made the morning after

Chief inspector Dave Lawson says this increase could be because they've tried something new this year:

"The difference this year is that all of the sectors and districts across the county have run their own little operations as well so for example Daventry ran a morning after campaign on the A45 where they were stopping motorists so its been properly county wide this Christmas"
