A fifth man has been charged in connection with a bungled heist in Northampton that was eventually foiled by supergran Ann Timson.

Police yesterday (Thursday March 31st) arrested, Edward Smith, aged 28, from Islington, almost eight weeks after an armed gang attempted to smash their way into Michael Jones Jeweller, in Gold Street.

He has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and has been remanded in custody.

Londoners Jason Hartles, aged 25, from Islington, Michael Sharpe, aged 39, from Hornsby, Patrick O'Brien, aged 18, from Islington, and Terry Ingles, aged 22, also from Islington, have also been charged with trying to rob the shop.

Video footage, which shot plucky pensioner Ann Timson, from Spring Boroughs, to international fame after she single-handedly thwarted the robbery, showed a gang of at least six attempting the brazen smash and grab.
