The Virgin London Marathon comes up in April and takes centre stage when it comes to marathon running in the UK...but it's not all about the highest-profile events.
There are hundreds of marathons, half-marathons, 5k and 10k races and fun runs taking place up and down the country each year, providing challenges for every level of ability and many have shortened junior versions for younger members of the family.
Preparing for these races takes a lot of thought, as well as the commitment to actually get out there and train! So this month, we're looking at long-, medium- and short-term preparation for running these events.
