A teenager who drowned in a river in County Durham has been named by police.


A teenager who drowned in a river in County Durham has been named by police.

A rescue operation was launched after 14-year-old Cameron Gosling got into trouble in the River Wear in Witton Park.

Specialist river teams spent the night searching the water, at a spot said to be popular with children for swimming when the weather is hot.

Durham Police said his body was eventually recovered and they had informed the family.

Earlier a police spokesman said: ``A body has been recovered from the River Wear by officers searching for a missing 14-year-old boy.

``Police divers discovered the body in the river in Paradise Park, Bishop Auckland, close to the spot where a 14-year-old boy got into difficulty.''

In 2013 two other teenagers, Tonibeth Purvis, 15, and Chloe Fowler, 14, died after also getting into difficulty in the river at Washington during a similar hot spell.

A body has been recovered from a river in County Durham by emergency services searching for a missing teenager.

A rescue operation was launched after a 14-year-old boy got into trouble in the River Wear in Witton Park.

Specialist river teams spent the night searching the water, at a spot said to be popular with children for swimming when the weather is hot.

Durham Police said a body was eventually recovered and formal identification was expected to take place.

A spokesman said:
``A body has been recovered from the River Wear by officers searching for a missing 14-year-old boy."

``Police divers discovered the body in the river in Paradise Park, Bishop Auckland, close to the spot where a 14-year-old boy got into difficulty.

``A formal identification has not yet taken place and there will be a further update.''
