Newcastle businessman Jeremy Middleton's become the first person to throw their name into the hat for the North East mayoral race.
The millionaire entrepreneur, who was awarded a CBE in 2012 for services to politics and charities, will seek the Conservative nomination.
He says one of his main aims is to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro to Ashington, Team Valley and Durham.
He also says he's passionate about creating opportunities for young people in the region.
In 2008, Mr Middleton was president of the Conservative National Convention and chaired the party conferences in Birmingham and Newcastle-Gateshead.
He was a by-election candidate in Hartlepool in 2005, a candidate in the 2004 European Elections for the North East and stood for Newcastle East in 1997.
