First Mayoral Candidate For The North East
Newcastle businessman Jeremy Middleton's become the first person to throw their name into the hat for the North East mayoral race.
The millionaire entrepreneur, who was awarded a CBE in 2012 for services to politics and charities, will seek the Conservative nomination.
He says one of his main aims is to extend the Tyne and Wear Metro to Ashington, Team Valley and Durham.
He also says he's passionate about creating opportunities for young people in the region.
In 2008, Mr Middleton was president of the Conservative National Convention and chaired the party conferences in Birmingham and Newcastle-Gateshead.
He was a by-election candidate in Hartlepool in 2005, a candidate in the 2004 European Elections for the North East and stood for Newcastle East in 1997.
He's been speaking to Heart about his main aims, if he were to be elected:
A team of trained officers will investigate allegations of child abuse at Newcastle United, relating to the 1980s and 1990s
A Gateshead mum, who lost her son in a crash caused by a driver on drink and drugs, is warning others not to drink or drug drive
Police were called to an alley near Poplar Street this morning where a man was found seriously injured
