North East Woman In Nice 'Lucky' To Miss Attack

15 July 2016, 14:20

A Northumberland woman in Nice has exclusively told Heart how she narrowly missed getting caught up in last night's terror attack, which killed 84 people.

A truck drove into crowds who had gathered to celebrate the French national day in the Mediterranean city on Thursday night.

French President Francois Hollande has been visiting a hospital treating those injured - he says around 50 are between "life and death."

Among those in last night's crowds was Gill from Northumberland, who now lives and works in Nice.

Speaking exclusively to Heart, she says it's an event she goes to every year:

The driver - who was shot dead by police - has been identified locally as a 31-year-old man of Tunisian origin and was known to authorities for 'petty crime'.

Three days of national mourning will be observed across France, as the country's state of emergency is extended.

The Millennium Bridge on the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside will be lit up in the colours of the French flag tonight as a show of solidarity, meanwhile a book of condolence is open at Newcastle Civic Centre.
