76 people have been arrested in December for getting behind the wheel after drinking and 49 for driving under the influence of drugs.

Officers say several people were caught over the Christmas weekend including a man who tested positive for drink and drugs after being stopped in Wrexham in the early hours of Christmas Day.

On Boxing Day a driver was stopped for speeding on the A5 in Bangor, and failed the drug swipe test. The 23 year old was also found to be driving with no licence or valid insurance.

A 20-year-old man from Llangefni was also arrested on the A55 at Llanfairfechan, and a 33-year-old driver was charged with drink driving on Ffordd Derwen in Rhyl, on Tuesday. Meanwhile a man tested positive for cannabis in the Llanllyfni area near Caernarfon on Wednesday.

Sergeant Tony Gatley from the Roads Policing Unit of North Wales Police said: "It is unfortunate that we still find that some are willing to risk their lives and the lives of others by drink and or drug driving.

"This is clearly unacceptable and officers will continue to target those who continue to endanger the lives of innocent road users.

"Anyone who is considering driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs should know that we will be waiting."
