Nurse Guilty Of Hospital Poisionings

A nurse has been found guilty of poisoning patients in his care during a six month series of attacks at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.

49 year old Victorino Chua murdered two people, Tracey Arden (44) and Alfred Weaver (83) and made several other patients seriously ill.

All of the attacks happened between June 2011 and January 2012, when Chua was first arrested.

The first attacks involved saline drips being injected with insulin, which caused the blood sugar levels of patients to fall dramatically. An investigation started, which involved armed police being placed on some wards of the hospital. Chua then changed his method of attack, by altering the medical records of patients so that other nurses would give out dangerous doses.

Greater Manchester Police say the investigation has been one of the most complicated in their history. In the end, the key piece of evidence (pictured below) was a Venn Diagram showing when patients died, and which staff would have been on duty at those times. The only reoccurring factor in all of the cases was Victorino Chua.

Chua was convicted after a 3 month trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Simon Barraclough from Greater Manchester Police led the investigation:

"Chua was tasked with looking after these people, and nursing them back to better health. What he's done has completely contravened that responsibility, and he has picked as his victims some of the most incredibly vulnerable people he could have targeted. I don't know why he's done this - he's never said, but he has deliberately killed these people. He knew he was hurting patients, he knew he was killing them, and he carried on"
