Tribute to Pensioner Killed in Bangor

Eifion Wyn Davies Hughes, died after being hit by a van in Bangor.

The 84 year old sustained serious injuries when a van crashed into the front of a building society on Stryd Waterloo in Bangor on 6th August 2013.

His wife Caryl said: “Mr Eifion Hughes was born in Wrexham where his father was a Baptist Minister. He spent his schooldays in Acton Park and Wrexham Grammar Schools. The family later moved to South Wales, to Penllergaer, and there he took a Botany Degree at Swansea University after doing his National Service in the medical division on troop ships carrying men to the Far East. 

"After college he taught at Llandeilo Grammar School and then moved to the Botany Department at Bangor Normal College where he specialised in lecturing through the medium of Welsh as well as English. His career there lasted from 1963 to his retirement in 1989 by which time he was Head of Science at the College.

"He was a talented water-colour artist, exhibiting at various galleries including the Royal Cambrian and Oriel Mon. He was also one of the organists at Penuel Chapel. 

"He was an active man who walked regularly around the area in spite of his age. He had been happily married to his wife Caryl for 54 years.

"He will be very much missed by all his family and friends in North and South Wales.”
