They say never say never. Wise words. Although if my battered little legs could speak, they might well say something very different. And that’s because 50 days from now, those same battered legs will be lining up in Greenwich alongside the good, the bad and the comedy running bananas taking part in this year’s London Marathon.
You see, this will be my 3rd Marathon. To do it once is brave. To do it twice is careless. To do it a third time… well that’s just certifiable.
Yet here I am again. And, to be honest, with good reason. When I heard about the launch of Have A Heart and the link-up with the Starlight Children’s Foundation, I knew I’d have to slip into the running shoes and lycra one more time.
As a new Daddy, I can’t imagine how I’d begin to cope if my baby daughter became as seriously ill as the kids who Starlight aim to bring a smile to with their Fun Centres and Wishes. These children and their parents show amazing resilience and spirit in the face of tremendous suffering. They are truly inspirational. So I’m delighted to have the opportunity to show my support in some small way. A bit of “jogger’s nipple” (I can feel the pain just writing that) and a couple of achy legs is a very small price to pay along the way.
There may be an easier way to get my hands on a bacofoil blanket and a small medal but until I’ve worked that one out, it’s going to have to be the Marathon. So wish me luck and please, in whatever way you can, support us and Starlight this year. Go on, Have A Heart!
