'U's go on parade

Thousands have greeted Oxford United's players as the squad took an open-top bus ride through the city to celebrate promotion to the Football League.

The players rode from the Kassam Stadium, up the Cowley Road, to a reception in Broad Street on the evening of Tuesday 18 May 2010.

It was after they beat York City 3-1 in the Conference Play Off Final to win promotion to the game's fourth division - something the team have been trying to do without success for four years.

Being back in League Two will be good for the club's finances, because they'll now get money from TV rights.

Oxford City Council Leader Councillor Bob Price said: "I would like to thank the thousands of fans and supporters who turned out last night to celebrate Oxford United’s marvellous victory at Wembley on Sunday and to congratulate the team on a season that has been crowned with glory.

"The huge turnout all along the route from Cowley to Broad Street shows how close to the heart of the community the club is, and the real pleasure that their success has given us."

Kelvin Thomas, Chairman of Oxford United Football Club, said: "The parade was the icing on the cake for the fans and the players.

"I was delighted that so many fans turned out to salute the players and it shows how much this club means to the people of Oxford and Oxfordshire.

"I want to thank the fans for supporting us through the season, lining the streets throughout the parade and for giving us such a good welcome in Broad Street."
