Crowland Fire

Smoke from a fire in Crowland, near Peterborough, is blowing towards nearby homes.

Around 25 Firefighters were called to the fire, which is in a barn containing cardboard and plastics, at around 11:20am today (Thursday).

Around 80 tonnes of packed together cardboard and plastics and another 30 tonnes of packed together straw has caught fire.

A plume of smoke from the fire is heading in the direction of the village of Newborough.

A spokesperson from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Residents and motorists who are affected by the smoke are advised to keep doors and windows closed and remain inside their homes or vehicles as a precautionary measure.

Anyone suffering from respiratory problems as a result of the smoke should contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or contact their local doctors surgery."

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
