Hundreds of workers were evacuated from an office block, after a fire at a nearby scrapyard in Peterborough.

It broke out just after 10am at DK Salvage in Third Drove, Fengate.

The fire was affecting the scrapyard itself and nearby industrial premises.

It is believed the fire started in a workshop on the site, then spread to the scrapyard which contained scrap cars, old metal and pressurised cylinders.

No-one was hurt in the fire, but nearby roads were closed and a factory close to the scrapyard was evacuated as a precaution.

A police cordon was put up around the site, which has since been taken down.

Ady Slack, Incident Commander said: "When we arrived the workshop and scrapyard were well alight.

The office block was in close proximity and this was immediately evacuated.

As there are cylinders on the site, there have been a number of explosions.

For this reason, firefighters used ground monitors, which are hose reels fixed to the ground to tackle the fire."

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire has now started.
