In particular officers need information to help them find a man seen loitering in Mutley Plain Lane, which runs parallel to Mutley Plain at around 4am in the morning that day.

SEE CCTV footage below:

He's described as:

  • Asian or mixed race appearance
  • 5’5" Inches tall
  • 20-25 years old
  • Slim build
  • Wearing a dark hooded top with red trim, the hood was worn up covering his hair.
  • Dark trousers

Officers have told Heart that the victim was returning from celebrating the New Year with friends and was followed into College Lane where she was attacked.  In order to subdue the victim the offender told her he had a knife.

He then ran back along the same road in the direction of the North Hill and the City Centre.

The forensic examination of the scene and the majority of searches have now been carried out.  House to house and other enquiries will continue this week.

Detective Inspector Steve Parker, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, who is leading the investigation said:

"The victim has been able to give a clear account of what occurred and although clearly distressed by these events has given a good deal of information that has assisted us to progress the enquiry quickly.

"A number of witnesses have provided information in response to yesterday’s press release which may prove to be of great value to the investigation.

"Fortunately these sorts of offences are extremely rare.  There is nothing to suggest there is any likelihood of further attacks.

Uniform patrols have been increased in the area in response to this offence and officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team are actively involved in the investigation to add their local knowledge and experience."
