Eight people have been rescued from a rollercoaster after it stopped working around 20ft off the ground.

Firefighters were called to M&D's theme park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, at around 2.50pm on Saturday.

The Tornado rollercoaster was reported to have stopped and there were members of the public still in the carriages, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said.

A cherry picker was used by fire crews who safely removed five youths, two women and one man from the ride.

No-one was injured in the incident.

A spokeswoman for the theme park said: "We can confirm that the ride stopped during a cycle and the automated safety procedure was immediately initiated.

"No-one was hurt and all health and safety procedures were carried out. We have spoken individually to those involved and everyone is safe and well.

"The ride is now closed as we are carrying out a full investigation.''
