Alba, Ziggy And Paisley Among 2016 Scottish Baby Names

Ten girls last year were given the same first name as Scotland's First Minister - five times the number who share their name with the UK Prime Minister.

A total of 10 baby girls born in Scotland last year were called Nicola while two were called Theresa.

Meanwhile, five babies were given the same first name as Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson.

Alba, the Gaelic for Scotland, was the name given to 42 girls who were born in 2016 while one was named Eire, the Irish for Ireland, according to new data from the National Records of Scotland.

It published a list of every single first name given to children born in 2016, with this showing 20 girls were named Indie along with three called Indy and another four with the name Indi.

There was one boy called Clinton in 2016 - the year Hillary Clinton fought to become the first female president of the US - and seven boys were called Donald.

A number of parents appear to have taken inspiration from places across the globe when naming their offspring, with one girl called Boston, another called Vegas, one Denver,  one Paris, two named Rio and 16 called Paisley.

One little boy was called Cairo while another was given the name Carlisle.

Other parents seemed to turn to famous musicians when considering baby names, with one boy called Elvis and another little boy called Bowie born in 2016 while there were two boys named Ziggy - perhaps after the late pop star David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust alter-ego.

Another boy was named Sheeran, possibly suggesting his parents are fans of chart topper Ed Sheeran.

One girl was called Winter but there were 22 Autumns and 56 Summers born in 2016.

Other names chosen by parents of girls include Adorabelle, Apple, Beau-Bear, Blu-Tygar, Brie - which was the name given to two newborns - Cerise, Chanel, Dior, Empress, Precious, Velvet and Y.

More unusual names for boys included Alpha, Archer, Boon, Diamond, Fountain, Harley-Davidson, Maverick, Oak and Pride.

A number of boys were also given animal names, with two youngsters called Bear, one called Fox and another named Wolf.
