A man has been arrested after an apparent attempt to grab the Queen's Commonwealth Games Baton as it was being carried through the streets of Kilmarnock.

The incident happened as the relay made its way through the East Ayrshire town at around 6.30pm today.

The event was not stopped and the baton-bearer continued waving to the crowds as he made his way along Kilmarnock's Portland Road.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal, Police Scotland said.

The baton was in Kilmarnock after a day of celebrations on the eighth day of the Scottish leg of the relay.

It has travelled through 70 nations and territories in its 248-day journey around the Commonwealth, with the final destination being the opening ceremony of the Games in Glasgow next month.
