Body Recovered In Search For Missing Diver At Abandoned Quarry
A woman's body has been recovered from an abandoned quarry where two teenagers previously died.
Emergency services were called to Prestonhill quarry near Inverkeithing, Fife, on Sunday night after a female diver got into difficulties and failed to resurface.
Police officers, the fire service, coastguard and a Police Scotland helicopter made their way to the scene to help with the search before a woman's body was found on Monday morning.
An investigation is now under way to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.
It comes after Cameron Lancaster, 18, from Burntisland, died at the quarry in August 2014, with John McKay, 18, from Kirkcaldy, also dying there in June 2015.
Following the two deaths, Forth Diver Training was launched to provide diver training courses in a bid to prevent another tragedy.
The charity project was unveiled after the diving community, who have used the site for many years, were invited to work alongside Fife Council and the emergency services to look at ways of improving water safety awareness.
Inspector Ian Stephen, of Dalgety police station, said: "We can confirm that a woman's body has been recovered from Prestonhill quarry, Inverkeithing.
"Officers responded along with other emergency services to the site around 9.20pm on Sunday July 9 following reports of a diver within the water.
"A body was recovered around 10.30am on Monday July 10.
"Inquiries are currently ongoing to confirm the woman's identity and to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
"The woman's family has been informed of this development.''
Police searching a landfill site for missing RAF gunner Corrie McKeague say "no trace'' of the serviceman has been found.
