A nine-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A92 in Glenrothes in Fife at around 5.40pm yesterday.

The child was taken to the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy and later died.

Police appealed for information about the incident which happened between the Cadham and Balfarg junctions.

Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: "Tragically this collision has resulted in the loss of a young boy's life and our thoughts are with his family at this harrowing time.

"We are appealing for any drivers or pedestrians who may have been on the A92 at the time of the collision to come forward and help establish the full circumstances of the incident.''

The road was temporarily closed at the junction of Western Avenue and Cadham Road but reopened later last night.
