Fans To Flock To Scottish Cup Final

Around 45,000 football fans are expected to descend on Glasgow today for the first all-Tayside Scottish Cup Final.

Around 45,000 football fans are expected to descend on Glasgow today for the first all-Tayside Scottish Cup Final.

Dundee United and St Johnstone will meet at Celtic Park to play for the famous trophy and St Johnstone fans will be hoping it is first time lucky for their side as the club plays in a first Scottish Cup Final in its 130-year history.

Dundee United have won the trophy twice, most recently defeating Ross County in the 2010 final.

The game is being played away from the usual venue of Hampden as the national stadium continues its transformation to an athletics arena for the Commonwealth Games.

Local businesses in Dundee and Perth have shown their support over the last week with flags, scarves, special cakes and pies presented to the teams.

Some of the Dundee United squad were even turned into characters in the Bash Street Kids cartoon strip in a special edition of the Beano, which is based in the city.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright has urged his team to make history.

He said: "Everyone has given us praise and plaudits for being the first St Johnstone team to get to the final but the job isn't done because we want to be the first St Johnstone team to win it.

"There is a level of excitement which has built up over the last seven days and the players are aware of the occasion and what it would mean to the club.``

Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara had similar advice for his side.

"That's what it's about, to win things,'' he said.

"As a footballer, that's what you want to be remembered for. I'm always confident in the players. I know what they're capable of doing.''

In tribute to former Dundee United player Frank Kopel who died earlier this year, his wife Amanda will carry the trophy on to the pitch with St Johnstone legend Roddy Grant and place it on a plinth before the start of the match.
