A man has appeared in court charged with the rape of a woman as she walked home at the weekend.

The 40-year-old was allegedly pushed to the ground and assaulted on Merksworth Way in Paisley, Renfrewshire, at around 2.20am on Sunday.

She was later helped by the residents of a nearby house and taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

Police launched a large-scale investigation and arrested a 38-year-old man early on Wednesday.

Stanislaw Marek Merdocz, from Poland, appeared in private at Paisley Sheriff Court and was charged with rape under sections one and two of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

The case has been continued for further examination with a further court date to be set, the Crown Office said.
