Man In Hospital After Group Attack

Police are hunting a group of up to 12 men who left a man hospitalised in an unprovoked attack.

The 33-year-old victim was walking in Cowgate near Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh at about 2.30am on Sunday when he was assaulted.

He was hit from behind and then attacked by a group of between six and twelve men, police said.

He suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Witnesses have told officers that the group were in their 20s and that most of them were wearing tweed jackets, shirts, ties and brogues.

They left in the direction of Victoria Street after the attack.

Police are appealing for any witnesses or for any information on where the group had been earlier in the night.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart said: "This appears to have been an unprovoked assault which left the victim needing hospital treatment.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of the Cowgate around 2.30am on Sunday morning and who saw this altercation take place.

"The group of suspects have been described as wearing distinctive tweed jackets and so we hope this description will assist in jogging people's memories, particularly if they have information on which pub or bar they were in beforehand.''
