Murray Moves Step Closer

Andy Murray continued his quest to replace Roger Federer as world number two by beating Tommy Robredo to reach the third round of the Rogers Cup.

The British number one's meeting with Robredo was locked at 4-4 when heavy rain in Montreal forced a postponement to Wednesday, but Murray maintained his focus and beat the Spaniard 6-4 7-5, despite falling a break behind in the second set.

The match's late finish put paid to hopes Murray would also manage to tackle his older brother Jamie on the same evening - the pair are scheduled to meet each other in the men's doubles but the encounter could not be squeezed into Wednesday's programme.

Of his meeting with Robredo, Murray told Sky Sports 3: "It was tricky conditions, very different to yesterday, and when the shadow came across the court it was tricky.

"Picking up the ball was hard and Tommy makes you work for every single point. I lost my timing a little bit in the middle of the second set but I came up with some good shots when I needed them towards the end.''

His next opponent will be Gilles Muller after the Luxembourg player beat Gael Monfils 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7/4).

Should Murray reach the final he will replace Federer in the world rankings. The Scot last held the position - the highest of his career - in August 2009.
