Scots Raise £4million For Quake Victims
The total donated in Scotland to an appeal raising money for those affected by the Nepal earthquake has reached £4million.
Across the UK, £47million has been raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal which was launched last week following the April 25 quake which killed more than 7,800 people and injured thousands more.
The money will allow aid charities to reach an estimated 310,000 people, helping with emergency supplies, including food, shelter, water and sanitation kits.
The DEC, which is made up of 13 UK aid charities, said they are working in some of the worst-affected parts of the country.
Neil Mathers, chairman of the Scottish appeal, said: "Despite the immense challenges facing those affected and relief efforts, the response continues to grow day by day. We are now delivering more aid to some of the worst-affected areas, and our members are expanding their efforts into remote regions.
"Our members' teams are working around the clock to provide essential aid. A huge amount of work remains to be done before the monsoon rains make the response even more difficult and the risk of disease outbreaks increase.
"The overwhelming generosity people in Scotland, and indeed all over the UK, will help families get through the next few months and rebuild their lives over the coming years.''
Family members now spend an average 13 hours a week providing childcare and the average cost is now £4.19 an hour for each child.
Almost 1.8 million votes cast north of the border in June did not go towards electing an MP.
