Adele and Katy Perry named top artists

The two singers are top selling musicians of 2011

Adele sold over 2.51 million copies of her second album 21 in the States alone, whilst Perry sold over 4.12 million copies of her single E.T., the forth from her studio album Teenage Dream.

Adele's album is the only one in the US to sell more than 2 million units. The second most successful LP was Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which shifted a little over 1 million copies.

Adele's single "Rolling in the Deep" sold over 4.08 million since its release at the beginning of the year.

Katy Perry also spent over 52 weeks in the US Hot 100 Top Ten Singles chart and if her current record, Last Friday Night (TGIF) reaches number 1 of the single charts, she will be the only female artist to have 5 number 1 singles from the same album.

Only Michael Jackson has achieved this before, with five top spot songs from the album Bad.
