'The Artist' cleans up at the BAFTA Awards

Meryl Streep and 'Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy' bag the prestigious award but 'The Artist' is the real star of the glitzy event

It was a truly glamorous night in at the Royal Operah House in London with a big contingent of Hollywood stars attending the 64th BAFTA Awards.

Brad Pitt , George Clooney , Meryl Streep , Jessica Chastain , Christina Hendricks , Christina Ricci and Martin Scorsese were just some of the Americans at the event this evening.

British actors such as Colin Firth , Daniel Radcliffe and Helena Bonham Carter were present too.

Streep bagged the Best Leading Actress Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady', whilst the Best Leading Actor Award went to 'The Artist's Jean Dujardin .

'The Artist' also won Best Film, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius) and Best Screenplay , whilst Best Adapted Screenplay went to 'Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy ', starring Colin Firth.

Best Supporting Actress went to Octavia Spencer for her role of Minny Jackson in Oscar nominated 'The Help', and Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor is for 'Beginners'.

Best Documentary went to Senna and Best Animation went to Rango .

Outstanding British Contribution went to actor John Hurt , whist Martin Scorsese received the BAFTA Fellowship Award .
