Carol Lee Scott, best known for her role as TV witch Grotbags, has died aged 74.

Her niece Gina Mear posted a short message on Twitter, saying: "My dear aunty Carol passed away yesterday, RIP #Grotbags, I will miss you."

Grotbags originally appeared in Emu's World in the 80s alongside Rod Hull and Emu, but such was her popularity, the character was given her own show which lasted for three series.

Born in Somerset, Scott spent 19 years working as a Pontins Blue Coat, where she honed her live entertainment skills, before collaborating with Hull on their popular series of children's shows.

The character of Grotbags was first created when Scott spent a summer season performing alongside Hull in Cleethorpes, before evolving into the green TV 'baddie' that children just loved to hate.

When Hull was offered his own TV show he suggested Scott to play the witch, bringing Grotbags to a whole new audience of kids.

The series, which also featured the characters crocodile Croc, tin butler Robot Redford and manservant Grovel was full of singing and dancing and spawned the catchphrase "There's somebody at the door!"

Scott remained friends with Hull until his death in 1999, when he fell from his roof while adjusting his TV aerial.

Fans commented on their shock of Scott's death on Twitter.

One wrote: "Rest in peace Grotbags. You made my early years awesome. I was so scared of you!"

Another said: "Daleks. Zelda. Skeletor. Nothing - NOTHING - terrified me quite like Grotbags. Bravo! #RIPCarolLeeScott."

Actor and comedian Rufus Hound payed tribute to the actress, calling her "an icon for folk of my generation".

The Grotbags series was created by Scott and puppeteer Richard Coombs.

It included characters such as Colin the Bat, Doris the Dodo and Norman Nettle, all of whom lived with Grotbags in the spider and cobweb filled Gloomy Fortress.
