One of Australia's greatest actors, Bill Hunter, has passed away.

The 71 year old lost his battle with cancer on Saturday evening (21.05) surrounded by family and friends.

You may remember Bill as Bob in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Barry Fife in Strictly Ballroom, Major Barton in Gallipoli and Muriel's father, Bill Heslop in Muriel's Wedding. He also provided the voice of the dentist in Finding Nemo.

Russell Crowe, who was six when he appeared alongside Hunter in the 1970 movie Spyforce tweeted: "Very sad to hear about Bill Hunter. Unique talent. Thanks for the entertainment mate, RIP."

Dannii Minogue tweeted, "RIP Aussie icon Bill Hunter. We will miss you"

Hunter's film legacy will carry on - two movies he is part of are due out later in this year.

Red Dog begins screening in August, and The Cup, a horse-racing movie is due out before the end of the year.
