She captioned one of the photos: "I'M ENGAGED this is the moment my beautiful husband to be asked me to be his wife. I honestly couldn't ask for a more perfect man to be my soon to be husband."

Sonia told the Manchester Evening News : "I’m so happy to be engaged. He is my best friend as well as my partner and we’re excited to spend the rest of our lives together! Although we’d discussed the possibility of it happening one day, I wasn’t expecting it anytime soon so it was a huge surprise.

"Without going into too much detail, he took me to Manchester Town Hall pretending we were supposed to be trying a new restaurant in there.

"Upstairs is a beautiful space which they call 'The Bees' where we stood talking. He then surprised me by getting down on his knee with the ring in his hand. I burst into tears and of course said yes!"

Sonia's real life is a far cry from the twisted storyline of her Coronation Street character, Mel, who is currently caught up in the dark goings on between Bethany Platt and Nathan Curtis.

But for now, Sonia is enjoying her engagement and setting plans for her big day.
