A Centurion struggles to break free of the shadow cast by his father's apparent failure 20 years earlier. After all, his father was responsible for leading 5,000 men to their death in the unchartered highlands of Caledonia.

Now faced with the possibility of retrieving the Legion's lost emblem - the eagle of the Ninth - as well as the rare chance to clear his father's name, Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) decides to head north with just a slave, Esca (Jamie Bell) to guide him.

But outside the safety of the Roman camp, the treacherous terrain works against them and it seems that Esca has a purpose of his own - as well as a dark secret - one that could tip the balance of power into his favour.
