Emilie (Audrey Tautou) runs a hair salon where she's shocked to learn that the unassuming handyman Jean (Sami Bouajila) is massively overqualified for his humble position. What Emilie doesn't know is that Jean is also madly in love with her.

Plucking up his courage, Jean writes her an anonymous romantic letter, but thinking it's from the sweet old man next door, Emilie chucks it in the bin! Then she remembers her mother Maddy (Nathalie Baye), who's been down in the dumps since Emilie's dad left her.

Changing the name on the letter, Emilie forwards it to Maddy, who promptly rediscovers her will to live. Everything's great for a while, but now Maddy's had a big confidence boost she starts demanding more letters. And that's not all - she wants to actually meet the romantic wordsmith who's unwittingly won her heart...
