History ends at Wells Cathedral

630 years of history has come to an end at a West Country Cathedral.

That is how long people have been winding up the clock at Wells Cathedral, by hand.

Wells clockFor the past 80 years it has been done by generations of the Fisher family, but the current clock keeper Paul Fisher has retired.

He told Heart it was a rewarding job:

Rather than finding someone else to take over, Cathedral bosses have decided it is time to move into the modern age by fitting the winding mechanism with a motor.

Cathedral administrator Paul Richards admits it is a sad moment, but they have to move on:
