Support Service Launched as Repossessions Spiral

12 May 2010, 06:00

Now a Mortgage Advice Line has been launched to offer free advice to homeowners worried about their mortgage.

Aswell as offering free independent advice on mortgage worries, the advisors will be able to give callers advice on benefits that they may be entitled to and direct them to the correct agencies for further support.

Peter McGuire, Somerset Recession Impact Coordinator, said " Over the last couple of years the number of home owners that are struggling to pay their mortgages has increased signifigantly.  The international credit crunch has meant repossession claims have increased dramatically in Somerset over the period.

Tyhe new phone line has been set up in partnership with the district council and CAB.  The line is opne from 9am to 4pm Mon to Fri with late opening on Wed until 6.30pm or can be accessed online at www.somersetsupport.co.uk

The recession has hit homeowners hard: around 400,000 mortgage accounts are currently in arrears across the UK. With household incomes coming under continued pressure, more people will face the prospect of losing their home over the course of 2010.
